A collage (From the French: coller, to glue) is a work of formal art, primarily in the visual arts, made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. A collage is a good way to subvert the existing cacophony of media and rearrange it with new message; a method of culture jamming.

A collage is a collection of any existing objects, arranged in a very fluid way using an intuitive process of arrangement. It could be a collective of elements thrown (literally) together. Although a collage can be themed. A collage relies a lot on chance and gesture to influence it’s composition.

The process of collection can be an important process in constructing the collage, particularly considering the ease of collection of images on the internet, it is important that this method is not overused.

  • By yourself or in a group collect images / photos from a variety of medias.
  • Organise a surface such as a piece of paper or a wall. Get some adhesive which suits the surface in question; e.g. pva glue, pritt stick for paper, or wall paper paste for a wall.
  • Cut or tear up the content and arrange it.
  • Once the new composition is ready, read into it, and if applicable/ necessary reinterpret- e.g. you could take a photo of it and manipulate it in a digital format or work into it.
